How to Play Checkers Master

Everything you need to know — from basic controls to advanced strategies that will make you unstoppable.

Game Controls

Checkers Master uses simple drag and drop — no complex inputs to memorise.

🖱️

Click & Drag

Click on any of your pieces, hold the mouse button, and drag it to a valid square to move.

👆

Touch & Drag

On mobile or tablet, press and hold a piece with your finger and drag it to the destination.

Jump Capture

Drag your piece diagonally over an opponent's piece to capture it. The captured piece is removed from the board.

👑

King Move

A crowned King can be dragged diagonally in any of the four diagonal directions — forward and backward.

Game Rules

Standard checkers rules apply. Here's everything you need to know.

Basic Movement

  • Pieces move diagonally forward only (toward the opponent's side).
  • Pieces can only land on dark squares.
  • One square per turn unless a capture is made.
  • You cannot move through or land on occupied squares (unless jumping).

Captures & Jumps

  • If a jump is available, you must take it — capturing is mandatory.
  • To capture, jump diagonally over an adjacent opponent piece to an empty square beyond it.
  • Multiple consecutive jumps in a single turn are allowed and encouraged.
  • Captured pieces are immediately removed from the board.

King Promotion

  • When a piece reaches the farthest row from its starting side, it is crowned a King.
  • Kings can move and capture diagonally in all four directions.
  • A piece promoted to King during a jump cannot continue jumping that same turn.
  • Kings are visually marked to distinguish them from regular pieces.

Winning the Game

  • You win by capturing all of your opponent's pieces.
  • You also win if your opponent has no legal moves available on their turn.
  • If neither player can win, the game ends in a draw.
  • After a match ends you can immediately start a new game.

Strategy Tips

Apply these principles and you'll immediately play stronger checkers.

💡

Control the Centre

The four central dark squares are the most powerful positions. Pieces there have more jumping options and are harder to attack.

🛡️

Guard the Back Row

Keep at least one piece on your back row as long as possible — it prevents your opponent from promoting pieces easily.

⛓️

Plan Chain Jumps

Before moving, look for multi-jump sequences. A single turn that removes three pieces can turn the game in your favour instantly.

👑

Race for Kings

Kings are worth far more than regular pieces. Prioritise promoting your pieces while blocking your opponent's path to the back row.

Common Questions

In Checkers Master, the game highlights valid moves for you, so if a jump is available it will be shown. You must select a capturing move when one exists — the game enforces this automatically.
No. Regular pieces can only move diagonally forward. Only Kings gain the ability to move in any diagonal direction, including backward. This is one of the main reasons promoting pieces is so important.
The AI in Checkers Master is competitive and plans several moves ahead. It will take mandatory captures, chain jumps when possible, and prioritise king promotions — making it a solid challenge for players of all levels.
Currently Checkers Master features single-player mode against the AI. Pass-and-play with a friend on the same device may be added in a future update based on player feedback.
